ROSEMARY ELLEN GUILEY’S STRANGE DIMENSIONS NEWSLETTER
September 2011 www.visionaryliving.com
In this issue: Books news… classes and workshops… upcoming events… article on a haunted mattress!
First, my prayers and thoughts go out to all who have been impacted by Hurricane Irene. Fortunately I got through it all right here in Connecticut.
NEW BOOK: “TALKING TO THE DEAD”
My book on spirit communications, co-authored with George Noory, the host of Coast to Coast AM, is available on pre-order on amazon.com at http://amzn.to/oQwbpq. The book will be released in October in hardcover from Tor Books. George and I explore the technological side of spirit communications, including the “ghost box” real-time, two-way conversations. Controversies, startling evidence, and the implications of hard proof of the afterlife are just some of the topics in this comprehensive examination of the cutting edge of paranormal research.
CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS
Due to demand, I am resuming giving classes and workshops on a variety of paranormal and spiritual topics. For the past few years, most of my work has concentrated on research, media and conferences. I have been getting increasing requests for teaching in different formats. I have designed programs on angels, dreamwork, psychic and intuition skill building, fairies, meditation, Shadow People, the Djinn, psychic protection, and spirit communications. These programs will be offered in a variety of formats and locations. The events schedule below includes them, and of course advance listings are given on my website, also listed below.
If you are interested in classes and workshops in your area, please email me at reguiley@gmail.com. If I have the opportunity to visit your area, I will investigate opportunities to pull something together.
DRAGON CON AND BEYOND
The spotlight is on Dragon Con this month, and I will be in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend for the 25th annual festivities. As always, it promises to be an exciting event, full of exotic costumes and interesting celebrity guests. William Shatner is coming back, but unfortunately Leonard Nimoy had to cancel.
It will be my fifth Dragon Con as a guest presenter. I will talk about the Djinn on the Paranormal Track, and vampires and occult nonfiction on the Dark Fantasy Track. My good friend Phyllis Galde, editor of FATE Magazine, will be joining me at the book table.
After that, I have a furiously busy month traveling around Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Connecticut for presentations, a Bigfoot expedition, and case investigations.

THE HAUNTED MATTRESS
I get a great deal of email from people who want to share their spooky and haunted experiences. This story, about a spirit that rode in on a second hand mattress, is a good example of spirit attachments to objects, or “possessed possessions.” Not every secondhand object comes with a spirit, of course. If unusual paranormal activity suddenly starts in your home, does it coincide with the acquisition of objects or furniture? If so, an attached spirit may be the culprit.
Usually, these are low level spirits who enjoy making disturbances, but they can escalate activity over time in frightening ways. One remedy is to remove the object from the premises. If you cannot bear to part with it, then you must get expert help to cleanse the object and send the spirit on its way.
The following account comes from Linda M. in Florida, a devout woman who says, “God is my best friend” :

In February of this year (2011) I was given a mattress by a coworker. He and a friend of his helped me tie it on the roof of my car.
A couple of nights later I hear a music box playing. I do not own one. It woke me up. I thought how strange that was and drifted back to sleep.
The next night I hear it again. I get up, go to the living room where I think it is coming from. Of course I see nothing.
I live here alone. I feel a presence watching me. At night when I lie down my closet door makes a sound. Then I feel a presence standing in the doorway. It scares me. My boyfriend comes to stay. In the kitchen out of the corner of my eye a black thing flashes by me.
That night I’m lying there in bed, and I hear a demonic voice say something in my left ear. Someone is here, I think. Then I turn over and my hair is being pulled. I tell Tony, my boyfriend.
I wake up that night. Tony is sitting up looking at the door. I said, “What’s the matter?” He said he saw something black standing there in the door, pointing.
Tony leaves the next day.
The next night, I hear the drawer under my stove being closed. Then I hear the sound of my dishes being moved. It is a distinct sound because they are plastic. I am awakened by this and go look but there is nothing.
My son comes to visit. We decide to get a frozen pizza. I go looking for my cookie sheet to cook it on. It’s not in the closet where I usually keep it. I search everywhere. I think for a second that someone borrowed it. My son says, “Maybe it’s in the pull-out draw under the stove.”
I say, “No, because I always put it with my other pots and pans so I know where to find it.” Finally I look just to prove it’s not there. Oh, my gosh. There it is! I’m astounded. I never use that drawer, I tell my son. We just shrug it off.
But now I figure that the ghost was thinking he or she was helping me put my dishes away. I had my dishes on the counter to let them dry. I guess it bothered the spirit that I didn’t put them away.
My son furnishes me with an entertainment center for my tv and two small end tables. I put one table at the closest wall of the living room. I put one of my cement statues on it. I put another statue on the other table. I am now alone again. In the night I hear the sound of something being put down on the table. A second later I hear it again. I go out of my room to expect to see something. Of course I see nothing. It sounds so much like my statues are being picked up and looked at, then put down again.
Another night I am lying in bed reading my Bible, which I did every night, and I pray for Tony and Bob (another past boyfriend). I start to cry because I can’t control their problems. I love them both so much. I cry for a long time and feel so sad for them. They are such wonderful people. I close the Bible and put it down. I close my eyes. I feel a hand or hands straightening my pillow under my head. I freeze. I guess the spirit was trying to comfort me. But what a scary feeling of hands under my pillow moving under my head.
Friday night I go out to the local pub. I come home late. I start to doze off. Bang! Bang! Someone is pounding on the closet door right outside my bedroom. This made me jump out of bed. I said, “Whoever you are, this is my house. I need my sleep.” It quit bothering me. I go back to sleep.
The next week I decide this mattress is what’s keeping me from sleep. So I call the thrift store and they take it away. I burned sage that night and walked through every room praying that the spirit will leave me and go to a peaceful place.
Since that night I have had a quiet night every night.

Comments: Linda was fortunate that the problem was easily resolved. What was the troublesome spirit? Not likely a ghost – most ghosts are mere remnants of residual energy. Active presences usually are some type of spirit.
However, if you are going to get rid of a “possessed” object, it is better to dispose of it rather than pass it on to someone else. Favored remedies are burial in the earth, disposal in deep water, and burning. If you take something to the local waste station, it will be burned, or compacted into a landfill, or even towed out to sea for dumping.
