Who Saved the USS Essex?

The experiences of the USS Essex were among the most fantastic in World War II. The Essex destroyed more Japanese planes and enemy ships than any other ship afloat during the war.

She received the Presidential Unit Citation, but that was not the most amazing thing about her.

If there ever was anything in this world to prove the existence of a guardian angel, the story of the Essex proves it beyond all doubt.

I was lucky to be on that ship through the war. She was the only carrier to last throughout the war. She was in every important battle after the Coral Sea. At the very beginning of her duty, she was in the raid at Rabaul. That’s the first time she showed her “luck.” ...
