When he came on deck that morning, the first thing the sailor noticed was the calmness of the sea. In the dawn’s twilight, the Atlantic was gray and nearly glass smooth. Strange, he thought, especially when the night before the ship had rolled noticeably in the rough sea.
He yawned, hunched his shoulders against the cold air, and headed for the bridge at a leisurely pace. From the corner of his eye something caught his attention. It was another vessel, a destroyer. It looked like something right out of World War II. Fascinated, he watched the old ship as it moved in the same direction as his ship, yet drawing closer.
Even this inexperienced sailor realized that there was something eerie about the ship. “It didn’t look right,” he said. “There was no sign of life. No one was on deck. The bridge looked deserted.” When the ancient destroyer came within about 100 yards of his ship, something even stranger happened. It became transparent. “Honest to God. You could see right through that thing,” said the sailor. “And then, I swear, it just disappeared.”
He ran to the bridge, and as soon as he got there he shouted, “Did any of you see that?” No one said a word, yet he knew he wasn’t the only witness to the ghostly destroyer. “The expressions on those guys’ faces told me I hadn’t imagined it.” ...
