Among the odd phenomena that are found in Eastern Europe and Russia, ghost trains are definitely among the strangest. I have collected many reports of phantom trains, and I believe there are many more unreported cases, mainly due to the reluctance of railroad professionals to discuss such unexplained phenomena.
Eerie tales of ghost trains have appeared in Russian publications, including the Trud newspaper, Tekhnika Molodezhi magazine, and the Sovershenno Sekretno newspaper. A detailed article was featured on September 25, 1998, in Rossiyaskaya Gazeta, a publication of the Russian Federation government.
The phenomenon of the ghost train (poyezd-prizrak, in Russian) has also been studied by a group of scientists from Moscow State University.
Nilolay A. Cherkashin, a retired Soviet naval officer, journalist, and philosopher, has collected a number of fascinating stories regarding the ghost train phenomenon. He has dedicated over 15 years of his life to the research of the subject.
