The Lemurians of Mount Shasta
by K. Martin
FATE :: November 2007

Jason begins, hesitantly.

“I had been hiking for about three hours on the lower parts of the mountain. I came to a meadow where there were all kinds of wildflowers growing and I decided to take a little rest in the sun.

"I had kind of started to drift off to sleep when, suddenly, I sensed I wasn’t alone.

“He was just standing there looking at me like I was a curiosity. You know, like he hadn’t actually observed a human so closely before, or something. I knew instantly what he was. I’ve lived around here all my life and I’ve heard the stories. But of course I never believed them. Just like I know nobody around here would believe me. “Then he told me not to be afraid. But it was too late for that. I guess he must have realized I was about to lose it, because just like that, he faded and disappeared. That didn’t exactly ease my mind, you understand. First he’s there, and then he just fades away. I got the heck off that mountain fast and I haven’t been up there alone since.”

Jason, who agreed to talk about his experience on the condition that only his first name be used, has been familiar with Mount Shasta for years. He is from nearby Dunsmuir and grew up hiking the wilderness around the mountain. Like everyone in the area, he had heard of the Lemurians. And like most he didn’t take the stories seriously, until he had his own experience....
