Conjure up, in your mind’s eye, King Arthur and his court at Camelot. See the knights of the Round Table, Lancelot and Guinevere, and the magical Merlin. Do you think they are a romantic fantasy, or at best the shadowy remnants of historical figures whose true identities and deeds will forever remain shrouded by the mists of time? Think again. In the minds of many people, not only are the stories true, but at least two of the tales’ characters, Merlin and the fairy enchantress Vivian, live to this very day. And not only do they exist, they can be visited—though perhaps only true believers can see them.
But don’t look for them in the logical places: England, Cornwall, or Wales. Rather, hop the Channel to France, for there, in the wild heart of Brittany, the old Druid and his lady reside in the ancient forest called Broceliande.

Often, this forest is identified as Broceliande.
The people of Brittany claim Broceliande is actually their own Paimpont Forest, the remains of a once-vast woods which, after centuries of logging, now covers just 27 square miles of central Brittany. But if Camelot is somewhere in Britain— and countless books claim to have determined its location, though none offer definitive proof—why would Arthur’s knights be wandering in the woods of France?
