Zora and the Zombies

In 1936, American anthropologist, and folklorist, Zora Neale Hurston, traveled to Haiti in order to investigate tales passed on to her by American Marines of voodoo practitioners creating undead, zombie slaves. They recalled tales from the 1915 U.S. invasion of Haiti of Marine raiding parties on voodoo rituals, their destruction of ritualistic artifacts, and the horrifying appearance of what they believed to be resurrected corpses who writhed in tranced anguish. She was amazed at the ease locals discussed the people who fell between the living and the dead. The zombies were spoken of not in darkened corners but, out in full view without fear of ridicule. Hurston, found her way into a circle of voodoo practitioners, and eventually was introduced to the frightening spectacle that was a woman named Felicia Felix-Mentor. Mentor, was a milky eyed, sporadic, shell of a once prominent woman who was pronounced dead thirty years earlier. Hurston, was told by local doctors that Mentor was most likely the victim of a vengeful ‘bocor’ or voodoo necromancer, who fed her poison which ate her brain up. Then came to retrieve her after her funeral. Hurston, soon fell ill herself. She began fearing that she had dug too deep, and was possibly being targeted by a bocor who had designs on turning her zombie next. She hastily made her way home to the U.S. and concluded “The key to understanding zombies, lay not in finding a secret potion or in debunking another people’s mythology. It was actually believing in them.”

NFL quarterback’s UFO sighting Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and his wife Emily went public about their UFO sighting over Austin, Texas when they tweeted the following on March 4, 2021: BAKER: “Almost 100%, Em and I just saw a UFO drop straight out of the sky on our way home from dinner… we stopped and looked at each other and asked if either of us saw it… Very bright ball of light going straight down out of the sky towards Lake Travis. Anybody else witness this?” EMILY: I won’t lie… I’m typically not someone who buys into UFO talk. But all I know is… I saw something tonight that I have never seen. And I’m a little thrown off.” When the media learned about their sighting, Mayfield told them, “I am a firm believer in UFOs and Sasquatch. It is real. I saw it. I am glad the Navy finally confirmed some more pictures. Now everybody doesn’t think I am as crazy. I believe.” It is reported that other people in the area also saw the UFO.
