Long hours on the road can be tiring – you may even see some things you can’t explain. These eerie experiences make for spooky stories to share with friends and family. Ahead of Halloween, Commercial Truck Trader is sharing four scary stories from the road.
1. The Man in the Snow
On the Commercial Truck Trader Facebook page, Linda W. shared a story about her father who worked for the Tennessee highway department. During a winter storm, he was sent out to clear snow from the road. On this chilly evening, he saw a young man with pale skin walking along the side of the road. This young man, who was only wearing a T-shirt and jeans, made eye contact with the snowplow driver as he rode by. However, when the driver went to get a second look at the young man from his side and rear view mirrors, he was nowhere to be seen. There was not a single trace of this young man – not even any footprints.
2. A Figure in the Distance
A user on Reddit shared a story about the time he parked off an exit ramp at 3 a.m. to get his regulatory 10 off-duty hours. Beneath the light of the full moon, he thought he spotted a human-looking figure in a nearby cornfield. He told himself that it was simply a scarecrow and settled in. While relaxing, he thought he saw movement from the corner of his eye, so he turned the lights off to get a better look from his window. Somehow, the human figure in the cornfield appeared closer to him than before. With very few cars passing him on the highway, he started to get nervous, so he got out of the car to take a look at the figure. Walking between his truck and its trailer, he started to look around when, suddenly, his stomach dropped. Whether it was nerves or his intuition, the driver jumped back in his truck and got back on the road. This time, he decided to get some rest at a well-lit Love’s Travel Stop. He said he hasn’t stopped on a ramp since that unnerving night.
3. Bee-ware of Strange Clouds
Reddit user Pirate_Freder recalled a time he was driving west on I-76 near Denver. His seemingly relaxing ride took a turn when, out of nowhere, he saw a massive cloud coming towards him. This cloud appeared to be solid and was at least 20 feet wide, as he remembers. He ruled out the cloud being exhaust from another vehicle, as there was no one in front of him. With no way to exit the highway, he slowed down and prepared to drive through this creepy cloud. He recalled hearing a loud sound as he smashed through the cloud. Instinctually, the driver turned on his windshield wipers and was shocked to see his windshield covered in guts – the guts from a massive swarm of bees.
4. Demon in Texas
This story has been edited for length and clarity.
Author Annie Wilder literally wrote the book on scary stories from commercial vehicle drivers. In her book “Trucker Ghost Stories,” Wilder shares a story from George Stern Sr. who was working a job in Texas after Hurricane Ike. He was tasked with hauling away mulch from a road that was said to be an Indian burial ground. After going to bed in the cab of his truck, he heard a commotion outside. He could feel his truck shaking and hear the wind howling. Over the sound of the wind, he started to hear voices speaking. Trying to ignore it, George settled down until he felt a hand come through his side window and touch him on the head. George threw his elbows around to defend himself and remove the hand from his head when the feeling of the touch went away. After laying back down he felt a heavy weight on top of him. George screamed aloud and saw his curtains suddenly move. After a few nights of this presence in his truck, George bought a DVD of “The Passion of the Christ” to play at night. After that, the seemingly malevolent spirit left him alone and he was able to get a restful night’s sleep.
